Feeding the right feed and feeding in appropriate amounts are two very important aspects of feeding your fish properly. Whether you feed your fish 4 times in a day or 4 times in a week, you have to make sure that you only feed them what they would eat within five minutes – otherwise you will find that it will make it much harder to control alqea and and to keep your fish ponds clean. By experimenting a bit, you would get the feeling about what is the right amount. If you see some food left over after 5 minutes, you know you are giving in more than necessary.
Ascertaining what is the good feed and how often you need to feed would largely depend on the water temperature. Fish living in warmer water have high metabolism and can be fed 3-4 times a day. Here, you should opt for that fish food that is high in protein. If the water temperature is around 60 degrees, you should not feed your fish that often. It would be more than sufficient to feed them on alternate days, and you should opt for food that is low in protein.
If the temperature of water falls below 50 degrees, you should stop feeding your fish. Your fish may become active during warm days and you may feel tempted to feed them; but don’t do that. Even if fish does need some food, it can get enough from the algae that coats the liner of the ponds. Remember, that in cold temperature, the metabolism of your fish becomes slow and it is not able to digest the food properly. It is not good for your fish to eat too much during this time. Even fish can get overweight – and no one likes to have to go on a diet – even your koi.
